Description
The desert is a hot and arrid place and you have to be tough to survive. - There is little water and lots of heat. The barrel cactus is a common sight in the southwest and a survivor that's uniquely suited to this desperate landscape. When the rare thunderstorm rolls into the desert this little guy drinks up the agua and stores it in its fleshy pulp for the intolerably dry days to come. In fact, if you are ever lost in the desert (heaven forbid) and you need water, carefully tear open a barrel cactus.
I love how the cooler blue colors come out in the shadows - a nice counter point to the yellows and greens.
This work captures everything I love about the desert - the textures, the colors and the ability of life to adapt.
